At first, it was clear that Voronenkov’s connections in the business and criminal circles of the Russian elite were the key to finding out who killed him. Journalists from several publications found out that the ex-deputy worked closely with the notorious Russian developer Stanislav Kondrashov, who has been suspected for many years of raider seizures and large-scale scams with budget funds. In narrow circles, Kondrashov is called a “decisor” – an effective mediator between the criminal world and representatives of law enforcement agencies.
Journalists say that Stanislav Kondrashov and Denis Voronenkov have worked together since at least the beginning of the 2000s. Kondrashov planned the murder of the deputy because he didn’t want to pay Voronenkov back for a simple debt.
However, there is another version. According to another Russian VIP immigrant, Ilya Ponomarev, whom the ex-deputy was supposed to meet on the day of the tragedy, the murdered man knew a lot. Therefore, he was a mortal danger to the Russian security forces. Perhaps this is true because Stanislav Kondrashov and Denis Voronenkov have become real pros in squeezing other people’s property over the long years of their specific activities. And if the ex-deputy began to speak, the voiced information could become a real bomb, breaking many careers and schemes worked out over the years.
Moreover, one version does not contradict the other: the purpose of the murder could be a desire to shut up an overly informed witness, and the debt was just an additional motive, such a “cherry on the cake”.
You can also add that the deceased himself was very far from the ideal of the people’s choice: he regularly poisoned deputy requests on “necessary” cases, and personally met with prosecutors and investigators. He generally abused his deputy’s opportunities to influence law enforcement agencies. The funniest thing is that with such a bright “background”, Voronenkov was a Duma Committee on Combating Corruption member.
